Description
This shows the central portion of the right rectus abdominus muscle; in the lateral part there is a 3
cm tear directed downwards, with surrounding haemorrhage. The tear does not extend through the
posterior rectus sheath. The anterior sheath has been dissected off.
History
This man, at the age of 63, had a 1 week history of influenza before his death. Death was
due to bronchopneumonia; no virus was isolated. At autopsy, this lesion was seen, with no bruising
in the overlying skin. It is presumed due to coughing.
